 DMU

August 1969

Set: LT330

A (later) Derby Lightweight (M56484, set LT330) and a Cravens set sit in New Mills Central Station Derbyshire in August 1969. This photo looking northwest towards Manchester was taken from the classic GCR latticed footbridge. The station was the junction for the Midland Railway line to New Mills from Millers Dale via Chinley and the Hope Valley line to Sheffield. I had travelled on the soon-to-be-closed branch line to Hayfield & was now waiting for my connection back to Sheffield. By this time the Midland line beyond Millers Dale to Derby was closed. The dmu in the Down platform seemed to be stabled there for quite a while before heading back to Manchester Piccadilly. Pete LG99.

15th April 1973

On 15th April 1973 a "Calder Valley" three car class 110 dmu disappears into New Mills tunnel heading for the Hope Valley line with a service for Sheffield and probably beyond. On the left in the New Mills turn back tunnel as we called it, because it was used to turn back the 2 car dmus back to Manchester is a class 104 dmu, this tunnel is 197 yards long and was only half bricked up at the other end, officially called Hayfield Tunnel and was the start of the 2.5 mile branch to Hayfield which closed to all traffic on 03/01/70. Today the tunnel is trackless but the tunnel mouth is still there, at the other end of the tunnel is the start of the Sett Valley trail which is on the old track bed to Hayfield. Andrew J Crowther.

A class 100 D.M.U. at New Mills Central, most probably 1980 or 1981. Arnie Furniss adds - That's the tail lamp from the inbound working. The driver has changed ends in the tunnel that was the sole remnant of the Hayfield branch and has brought the train into the platform for the return working to Manchester. The guard will now place the tail lamp at the other end as it's easier than doing it in the tunnel! Curly42.
